Downtown Dallas once had a reputation (similar to KC and St Louis) that it was purely a 9 to 5 type of destination…but as my visits to the city have increased over the past several years, that reputation has gradually changed. While this trip won’t allow for much fun, as highlighted in previous blog posts, this city has some of the city’s best museums and performing arts venues, as well as a bustling craft brew scene. As I have always said, the only way to truly know a city and its neighborhoods is to get out and experience it firsthand.

Dallas is not known for its public transportation, but downtown is one of the few places in the city where you won’t need a car to get by. While typically we Uber or hop in a cab, today we decided to take advantage of the DART light rail which took us right to the front door of our meeting situated at the corner of Pacific and Field. It was quick and efficient and the price was right coming in at $2.50 each way. It also provided a bit more to look at along the way.
One thing I questioned on my trip last week was the significance of the Pegasus sign situated in the front lawn of the Omni Hotel. But on this return visit I noticed it a bit more via building names and the coffee shop we decided to stop by. The original Pegasus was built atop the Renaissance Revival Magnolia Building by the Magnolia Oil Company in 1934. “The ‘Flying Red Horse,’ as it was referred to by Dallas residents, became a landmark immediately. Standing majestically 450 feet above street the Dallas icon was visible 75 miles away on a clear night. In 1999, deteriorated and lacking the luster of previous years it was finally removed. And until recently, no one knew the location of the original Pegasus. Omni Dallas developer Matthews Southwest discovered the sign in city-owned shed near White Rock Lake and worked to rehab back to its original grandeur. The Pegasus is now set atop a 22 foot oil derrick in the front lawn of the Omni Dallas.
Upon completion of our meeting we stumbled upon Salsa Limón – the newest outpost of a fantastic taco shop that

started as a food truck several years ago. Salsa Limón makes the best burritos and tacos and if there was one of these in Kansas City I would be in trouble. Everything is authentic, just like in Mexico City including the sauces, garnishes and fountain drink selection which includes Mexican sodas. Everything about this place was a hit including their minimalist décor which still had a lot to look at. I loved everything about this place and can’t wait to return.
